Well, now I've completed my degree (Environmental Studies BA via distance learning with the University of Exeter, grade 2:1) I'm starting to focus on clocking up some more real world experience. Here's what I'm doing:
Badgers
I have just adopted the role of Co-ordinater for the Stevenage area with the Herts & Middlesex Badger Group. I will be keeping records of all the badger setts in the area, making sure that they are filed with the groups own recorder and also making sure that Stevenage Council are aware of their presence in case of planning applications. I also hope to raise awareness locally and contribute positively to the welfare of our local badgers.
This year I have been surveying a Herts County Council site which will be resurrected as a Field Studies Centre. The site will also be used to train the Tree Wardens so they can begin to survey any areas they work in.
If you are interested in badgers click here to visit the Herts & Middlesex Badger Group website. As a charity we always welcome new members! Alternatively contact me on the email below.
Tree Warden Scheme
I have registered with Stevenage Council as a Tree Warden. This means that I will be watching out for any tree related issues in my area, reporting problems to the Council, and help with planting of new trees and management of existing ones.
Richard Arnold from Stevenage Council is the Arboriculture and Conservation Manager and I also plan to gather any wildlife records that I can so that we can start to develop a database for Stevenage.
I recently carried out a bat survey along Hertford Road, a report is available here
There are some exciting developments coming soon, as always, I'll let you know as soon as I can.
If you are interested in becoming a Tree Warden, or would like to help with logging the wildlife in Stevenage click here to email Richard Arnold, or drop me a line.
